Keele Station North West Garden
This garden is a short strip of land along Indian Road just north of the Keele subway station bordering a large parking lot. We have just started to restore this area. Three trees were planted by the city in 2019. Heavy mulching was provided in 2021.
We were very fortunate to receive a PollinateTO grant in early 2022. Thanks to PollinateTO.
Plants were sourced from Native Plants in Claremont. A publicity campaign was undertaken and a community planting event was held on May 28, 2022. About 15 people planted about 150 native plants. Watering was carried out by volunteers on the planting day and later. The pictures show the planting event and the subsequent growth. The photos of the flowering plants were taken in mid-September 2022. Just before the planting, we were notified by the TTC, the subway operator, that a driveway was needed over the north portion of the garden to allow large vehicles to reconstruct part of the parking lot. Large blue sheets were installed around the workslte and along the side of the garden.
In 2023, we will restore the driveway used by TTC to access the parking lot. We will then plant pollinator varieties of flowers.
