Railside Gardens
Railside Gardens is a 450 metre long and 3 metre wide strip located on the east side of Dundas Street West between Glenlake Ave and Dupont Street in Toronto. The garden was created in 2000 with generous financial assistance from a variety of donors shown on the original sign below.
The garden was destroyed in 2015 in order to build the concrete privacy wall along the busy rail commuter line. We began weed control and restoration in 2017 and plantings each year since then.
Thanks to a new generation of volunteers, along with some of the original residence, the garden has been restored. Not all are native plants but there are many and more will be added. A recent study by a York University student determined that there were at least 3 species of native bees in this garden.
Following are some pictures taken on a stroll along the sidewalk from the southern end of the garden 450 metres to the north. The pictures were taken in the early evening on October 23 2022. The last two pictures at the bottom, with the vegetation on the left, is southern most part of the garden.
For 2023, we need to do some tree and shrub pruning. Help is needed. Consider volunteering to help out. Email us on the contact page.
